A productive week in the print studio.

I spent a day or so printing at Hotbedpress last week, rolling out a few new T shirts and a bunch of prints for an exhibition in Liverpool next month (details soon.) Here are a few linocuts I haven’t shared yet.

Earth - linocut illustration

Earth - This print started off life as an illustration for a gig poster. I really liked the way the illustration worked on it's own so I hacked off the band names and details and ran out an art print.

The Boulder - linocut illustration

The Boulder - This is the first in a series of prints I'm planning called 'Harvesting'.

Yeti Heart - linocut illustration

Yeti Heart - This one was original created as a T shirt design, the heart being roughly wear your heart is when you are wearing the shirt.

Suivez Moi - linocut illustration

Suivez Moi - Another print that started life as a T shirt design.

L’hirondelle

Here’s something very cool I have to show – the first time an illustration of mine has been permanently inked onto human flesh! I did the illustration sometime in December and Anne-Marie Arpin had the tattoo on her calf shortly before Christmas. The tattoo artist was Juliette Paupiette, who did a such an awesome job. She took really good care of all those little details. Process photos courtesy of Anne-Marie below.

Bonne année

I’ve had a long, long new year break, spending some lazy and wonderful creative days with Anne-Marie. We’ve had some fun making papier-mâché masks and developing a couple of t-shirt designs. Hand-printed linocut t-shirts is something I’m going to add to my giant list of things to do this year, so keep your eyes peeled.

I had a nice surprise yesterday when an interview I did a while back for Unorthodox Magazine went live. A good way to kick off the new year I think.

Gutcheck campaign website

This was a pretty big commission I was involved in earlier this year that has just launched – a colon cancer screening awareness campaign for the US Department of Health and Human Services, working under the art direction of the lovely Jen Levin at IDEO. I was involved in a few different parts of the campaign: illustrations for an animation, illustrations and icons for the website, for posters and illustrations of large intestines for printing onto t-shirts(!)

Reach

Here’s an illustration I finished yesterday, done completely digitally for a little change. I think I might use it for a bit of self promotion later this month. Those reaching hands will touch this evening.

Declare Independence

I had my portrait taken recently by hugely talented photographer and all round beautiful human being, Anne-Marie Arpin, after a day of following Ian Curtis’s ghost around Macclesfield, Stockport and Manchester.

Aphasia illustration for Bulletin

Following on from my recent ‘Progeria‘ illustration for New Scientist, I received a commission from Carrie Bremner at Bulletin Magazine to produce an illustration for an article on ‘Aphasia’. Aphasia is an impairment of language ability that ranges from difficulty remembering words to complete inability to speak, read or write. I absolutely love these kind of commissions – I feel like I’m contributing something reasonably useful to society, plus the concepts and symbols associated with these challenging subjects make for really fun idea development.
